ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational health and safety management systems)
Occupational health and safety (OH&SMS) management system criteria are outlined in ISO 45001, an international standard that also provides usage instructions. This standard enables an organisation to proactively enhance its OH&S performance in reducing injury and illness.
Regardless of an organization's size, type, or nature, ISO 45001 is meant to be applicable to all of them.
Its requirements are all meant to be integrated into the internal management systems of an organisation
However, it should be emphasised that an organisation may be forced to handle such concerns by applicable regulatory requirements. ISO 45001 enables a company, through its OH&S management system, to integrate other areas of health and safety, such as worker wellness/wellbeing.
An organisation can enhance its performance in terms of health and safety by:
- • Creating and implementing an OH&S policy and OH&S objectives.
- • Setting up systematic processes that take into account the organization's "context," including its risks, opportunities, and legal and other requirements.
- • Establishing operational controls to manage its OH&S risks as well as its legal and other requirements includes.
- • Identifying the hazards and OH&S risks associated with its activities.
- • Attempting to eliminate them or putting in controls to minimise their potential effects.
- • Make sure employees take an active role in OH&S issues while also raising awareness of its OH&S risks and evaluating how well it is performing in this area.
- • enhancing its capacity to address regulatory compliance concerns
- • Being recognised for meeting an international benchmark (which may in turn influence clients who are concerned about their social responsibilities).
- • Reducing the overall costs of incidents.
- • Decreasing downtime and the costs of disruption to operations;
- • Recovering the cost of insurance premiums.
